What Do I Do Before a Disaster?

Our pets rely on us for their safety, especially during an emergency.  Planning ahead is the key to a successful evacuation.

**If You Need to Evacuate Without Your Pet**

Plan

Plan for different types of emergencies.

Ask a dependable neighbor or friend living nearby to take care of your reptile in case a disaster strikes and you cannot return home. They should have access to your house and know where you reptile's "Go Bag "is located.

Make sure neighbors/friends who may need to take care of your reptile are familiar with it.

Have a dependable neighbor or friend who lives outside of the area willing to take your reptile if you need to evacuate your town, city and/or county.

Contact hotels and motels in the surrounding area to see if your reptile can stay in your room during an emergency.

Have a list of your primary and secondary veterinarian willing to take care of your reptile during an emergency.

Prepare

  • Prepare a "Go Bag" for your reptile and keep it in an easily accessible place (by the door or closet).
  • Fill out "My Pet Vital Information" form.
  • Have a carrier or small container in which to put your reptile. Snakes can be transported in a pillow case or large sack, but must be transferred to more secure housing when they reach their destination. Attach your pets name and your name and contact information and your veterinarian's name and number in a sealed plastic bag or clear document holder.
  • Become familiar with local evacuation routes.
  • Establish a means of identifying your reptile, for example a photograph or a microchip for example.
  • Visit your Office of Emergency Management website to sign up for automatic alerts.

Act

  • Familiarize your pet with the evacuation procedure by placing your pet in its carrier every so often. Use the same carrier for veterinary visits or other travel trips.
  • Take your reptile and "Go Bag" with you in an emergency
